Basseterre is a beautiful, multi-cultured city that is surrounded by lush rainforest and mountains. As the capital city of St. Kitts, the name Basseterre came from the French and translates into lowlands. But, what makes this area unique is its eclectic history and the many architectural influences that were the result. Colonized by the French, fought over and claimed by the British, destroyed and rebuilt numerous times due to wars and weather, it is now home to many of the rich and famous and all these influences come together for an experience you won't soon forget.
Although St. Kitts once depended on upon sugar for its main source of income, tourism has now replaced sugar as the main source of revenue. This lovely island was also host to the World Cricket Cup back in 2007, which makes the country of St. Kitts and Nevis the smallest country to host a world cup event. But, the fact that many of its citizens are quite wealthy has also contributed to the beauty and upkeep of the city of Basseterre.
There is much to see and do both in Basseterre and on the island, check out our Basseterre Excursions! The grid-like pattern of the city with its combination of architectural styles make it a must see for those who love to sight see. There is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park for those who'd like to explore outside of the city. The government even built a road that goes all the way around the island, which makes sightseeing even more pleasant.
Our Basseterre Excursions will enable you to see the best of this city and island whether you prefer to sight see in air-conditioned comfort, or are looking for something a bit more adventurous like our St. Kitts ATV Fun Ride and Beach Break Excursion. Maybe check out the beaches that have sand that ranges in colors from white to gray and even to black due to ancient volcanic activities. The weather is just wonderful year round as well, which makes all outdoor activities quite pleasant such as our St. Kitts Mount Liamuiga Volcano Hiking Excursion or our St. Kitts Rainforest Adventure and Beach Excursion.
The language is English and the currency accepted includes the US dollar. Nothing could be easier than to have a good time while visiting the city of Basseterre on the island of St. Kitts, enjoy!
Fun fact: railway lines that used to carry sugar are now used to transport tourists.
